Comparing the two shows us how much Maugham evolved as a writer who sharpened his skills and acquired such mastery on the tricks of the trade. Sheppey tops the story for precisely what we appreciate in Maugham – the length is just about right, the characters are delineated with an optimal use of background and of course the humor is trademark Maugham. Still it is a play that was close to Maugham’s heart and he knew that it won’t set Box Office on fire even as when he issue it. Again Sheppey didn’t appeal much to Maugham’s audience who enjoyed him delivering the smart social comedies. The humour that comes at the end livens up the climax but obviously Maugham felt he could do a much better job with the theme by adapting it for his final play, Sheppey.
Surely if Maugham had revisited it later he would have snipped off large chunks of the story.Ī Bad Example holds a lot of potential but again belabors the point. What one enjoys a bit are the glimpse of Paris and Holland but the story could do with some serious editing.
‘The Choice of Amyntas’ is pure fantasy and it can be as if Maugham decided to take leave out of Arabian Nights.ĭe Amicitia is a sweet little romance that takes too much time to arrive to the point – and of course it is predictable from the start. Faith reminds me of a subsequent short story by Graham Greene, ‘Morin’, – may he was inspired by Maugham on this one as the themes are uncanny similar. The 2 stories that leave the least impact are ‘Faith’ and ‘The Choice of Amyntas’. Maugham is raw in his style and while one can see streaks of his sardonic humor he is yet to develop his trademark stamp in these stories except for Daisy – but more on that later. Daisy in particular seems to merit an inclusion -indeed many Maugham lovers would have missed reading these short stories given they were published early in his career and not curated subsequently. Possibly Maugham didn’t think highly of any of them as he didn’t include any while issuing 3 volumes of his short stories collection. The book comprises of 6 stories – 2 of them really have great potential while the rest are a bit of ‘also rans’. This happens to be first short story collection published by Maugham and it is early days in his long journey to be acknowledged as one of the best short story writers who modelled his style on Maupassant.
